I’m out of town at a family gathering - the first neice is getting married and it is a very big deal with brunches, luncheons, coffees and all that, not to mention the wedding tonight and reception to follow! But I did just receive an email from a builder who recently built and immediately sold a green modular home in Asheville. They are about to do another.

I’m not sure if I mentioned modular homes before. What do you think of when you hear “modular?” One of the houses you see going down the highway, taking up more road than it should - extra-wide load? We saw a number of them on the road coming here the other day.

Do you think of less than quality construction?

Well, not necessarily. There are on- and off-frame modulars. The ones you see on the highway are on-frame. The off-frame modulars may be quite good. There are several builders in Asheville who are doing Green Modulars.

Because the parts are precut in a factotry some place, they can be constructed with much less waste. That in itself is a green feature. The componants can be chosen from a variety of sustainable materials and features.

Another big plus is the price can be affordable. I’ve seen a number of them in the Asheville area at about $200,000 or less depending on how fancy you want the finishing and how many square feet you want, as well as if you already own the land.

When I get home I’ll put together some more specific info about some modular green homes for you. In the meantime, this computer is not behaving very well, so I’d better get off before I lose all this.

Hope you’re doing well and keeping cool! Email me if you have any questions.
